Dante's Inferno Links

Here is a fun link to a test that will tell you exactly where you belong in Dante's HELL!

And here is another link from the University of Texas at Austin. that archives all things Divine Comedy, including artists' renditions, verses read in the original Italian, links to annotated versions of the Inferno, and summaries and interpretations of the cantos. It's called Danteworlds. Check it out!

I was just wondering what thought people had regarding the order of the levels of hell that Dante chose. Being raised Catholic as well, i personally would have put them in a different order. For example, I'm not sure that I would make treachery the ultimate level of hell.

Those questions were difficult! They should put a maybe in there! By the way I got the first level.

I kind of agree with Dante. Purgatory and Limbo are obviously the top two levels, being the least bad. Lust and gluttony are something that most people have some of. Food and sex are both pretty prominent in society now, and probably were when Dante was around. Greed has always been around, but, I think, it's worse than lust and gluttony. Greed more often leads to someone hurting someone else. Wrath is worse than greed because it mostly hurts people. Heretics being in level 6 is a question of how important someone's honor and word are. Violence is worse, an active form of wrath. I agree with Dante that treachery is the worst because it implies that you have someone who trusts you and you go against that trust. It's worse than any other sin because it includes the trust. You have to build up trust, it's not something thats mostly freely given.

What order would you have put them in?
(I'm either in Purgatory or the 8th level)

i'm not sure what to think of the order of the levels of hell. how can one sit down and put sins in order like that? i'm sure everyone has their own opinion on what the said order should be, and that's exactly what dante is exploring; his opinion.

perhaps he experienced instances in his life that shaped the order. maybe he found himself guilty of lust and gluttony so he put those nearest to the top. maybe someone close to him pulled a benedict arnold so he put treachery at the bottom. see where i'm going with this?

Dante was Catholic, right?

The reason I ask is because his levels seem to contradict the view of sin in the Bible. In the Bible it says that no sin is greater than another because they all separate us from God. While it may seem much more detrimental to murder someone than to lie to your parents, they both create a riff between you and God and are thus "equal" in some sense. So with Dante being Catholic, how did he come up with the levels thing?

Yes, Dante was Catholic, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he understood or agreed with all of the rules and beliefs of the Catholic church. Anyone who has been raised Catholic I'm sure can agree with the fact that there are many rules and specific beliefs in the faith and sometimes they're hard to keep track of. Because, although Catholics believe that all sins separate you from God, they also believe in "mortal sins" which cause death to the soul as opposed to venial sins which are easily forgiveable. To me this causes a bit of a contradiction in beliefs but also helps to explain why Dante would separate hell into levels. I guess he didn't think that people like Judas and Brutus should be alongside virtuous people who simply didn't believe in God for all eternity.

I agree they should have maybe as an answer. I also got the first level. I also agree that how can someone sit down and put in order the levels of sins?

So, i just retook the quiz pretending to have no belief in religion at all and I was put in the circle with the heretics, predictably. But, there were also other levels that I scored very high in, so I guess the belief in God is the most important factor in the quiz, which makes sense, but is rather depressing for those virtuous nonbelievers out there.

Thinking on the place ment of Heretics, would a hertic not be some for m of treachery against the creator. They deny the one who made them and who holds dominion over them. However, there are those who curse their creator while still addmiting belief. So I suppose I do see why Heretics are put only slightly above those who committed treachery outright.

I think that they are separated from traitors because, althought they deny their creator, it is not out of resentment or personal gain. They simply do not believe that a higher being created them. Although, the comparison is close.
